The registered owner can order number plates for their vehicles using the application above.
If someone other than the registered owner needs to order number plates, they must contact the Icelandic Transport Authority to arrange the order and payment.
When placing an order, you can choose from different types and sizes of number plates, depending on the vehicle type and its use.
The following options may be available for passenger cars:
Standard number plates
Additional number plates
VAT number plates
Personalised number plates, if the vehicle is already registered with personalised number plates
Please note that before VAT number plates can be issued, the vehicle must meet the requirements for VAT registration and pass a modification inspection at an authorised inspection station.
Production and pick-up
You choose the pick-up location when placing your order. Number plates can be collected from the Icelandic Transport Authority or from an authorised vehicle inspection station.
Production of number plates takes 3 working days, or 1 working day if an express fee is paid. If the plates are to be delivered to an inspection station outside the capital area, the delivery time will be longer.
Please note that no notification or email is sent when the plates are ready.
Cost
A single number plate costs 6.736 ISK and two plates cost 13.472 ISK. If express processing is requested, the additional fee will be 3.341 ISK.
If number plates are ordered through Ísland.is, the invoice will be delivered to your digital mailbox on Ísland.is.
