Standard number plates

• Are used on most vehicles that are required to be registered.

• White with blue characters and available in sizes A, B, C and D

• The inscription consists of letters and numbers.

VAT number plates

VAT number plates are used on vehicles registered in the VAT vehicle use category.

• White with red characters and border and available in sizes A, B and D

• The inscription consists of letters and numbers

Private number plates

Private number plates may be be registered to cars and motorcycles. They cannot be registered to vehicles carrying other types of number plates, such as VAT number plates, off-road number plates or exemption number plates.

• White with blue characters and available in sizes A, B, C and D

• The inscription may consist of two to six Icelandic letters and numbers

• The inscription must not be likely to be confused with another number plate, violate Icelandic language standards or be likely to cause offence

Diplomatic number plates

Diplomatic number plates are used on vehicles registered in the diplomatic vehicle use category.

• Green with white characters and available in sizes A, B, C and D

• The inscription begins with the letters CD and includes an identifier for the country to which the vehicle belongs

Exemption number plates

Exemption number plates are used on vehicles registered in the exemption vehicle use category.

• White with green characters and available in sizes A, B and D

• The inscription follows the same rules as standard number plates

Off-road number plates

Off-road number plates are used on tracked vehicles, utility vehicles, airport vehicles and tractors that are mainly operated off public roads.

• White with green characters and available in sizes A, B and D

• The inscription follows the same rules as standard number plates

Off-road vehicle number plates

Off-road vehicle number plates are used on vehicles in the off-road vehicle category.

• Red with white characters and available only in size C

• The inscription follows the same rules as standard number plates

Trade number plates

Trade number plates may be used by vehicle dealers on unregistered vehicles for transport, test driving or demonstration purposes.

• Red with black characters and available in sizes A, B, C and D

• The inscription begins with the letters RN followed by three digits

Additional number plates

Additional number plates are used when equipment or a load obscures a vehicle's number plate.

• They have the same inscription and colours as the vehicle's number plates

• Available in sizes A, B and D
