Application for a private (personalised) number plate

Application for a private number plate

Private or personalised number plates are a type of number plates for which an inscription may be selected.

Application

To apply for a right to an inscription on a private number plate an application must be submitted to the Icelandic Transport Authority (ICETRA). The applicant must be the owner, co-owner or keeper of the vehicle. The private number plate´s inscription is assigned to the holder's ID number, not to the vehicle and is valid for eight years. Cars and motorcycles may carry private number plates.

Inscription

Two to six Icelandic letters and numbers may be used, but not characters such as hyphens, dots and commas. One empty letterspace is allowed. An inscription of two letters and three digits or three letters and two digits may not be used, as this could be confused with a registration number. It is not possible to apply for an inscription already in use or that resembles another too much. ICETRA rejects inscriptions that violate Icelandic language or are likely to cause offence.

Renewal

The right to a private number is valid for eight years. The right can be extended when three months or less are left of the validity, in which case a rights fee must be paid. The inscription of a private number is available for redistribution when the right of the previous owner has been revoked. If the right has not been renewed or the number plates been handed in to ICETRA by the end of the validity period, the vehicle is locked in. The lock makes it impossible to have the vehicle inspected or to carry out a change of ownership. The lock is removed from the vehicle if the right is renewed or if the number is handed in to ICETRA.

65 years and older

If the applicant is 65 years of age or older at the time of renewal, the person in question does not have to pay the rights fee. This does not apply to applicants who are 65 years of age or older at the time of their first application, in which case they must pay full price.

Waiver

The right to a private number can be waived, and their inscription will then immediately be available for distribution. Upon waiver, the private number plates shall be returned to ICETRA or to an inspection station where they will be disposed of. However, the previous owner may allow the new owner to use the same number plates, provided that they are in good condition and legible.

Inspection

If the private number ends with a digit, the inspection month is determined by that number, as with other registration plates. However, if the private number ends with a letter the inspection month is May.

Private licence plate as a gift

Private numbers can be purchased and given as a gift. You can both buy gift certificates for a private number or buy number plates with an inscription.
