Number plates handed in for storage

Vehicles can be temporarily registered as out of use by handing in the number plates to the Icelandic Transport Authority or to the nearest inspection station. If a vehicle has two number plates, both must be handed in. If one plate is missing, a new plate must be ordered when handing in the plates. Road tax is not charged while a vehicle is registered as out of use, and insurance can be cancelled for vehicles that are registered in general use.

Out of use with a sticker

If it is not possible to remove the number plates, the registered owner can register a vehicle as temporarily out of use with a sticker by filling out the application form above. A sticker marked “Use prohibited” will be sent to the owner’s registered address. The sticker must be placed over the inspection sticker on the vehicle.

By registering a vehicle out of use with a sticker:

• The charging of vehicle taxes is suspended

• No late inspection fee will be charged for the vehicle

It is not guaranteed that insurance will be cancelled for a vehicle that is registered out of use with a sticker. The owner or operator must contact their insurance company for further information.

Please note

• It is prohibited to use a vehicle that is registered as out of use.

• It is not possible to register a vehicle as out of use retroactively.

• When registering an electric, hydrogen, or plug-in hybrid vehicle as out of use, the odometer reading must be provided.

• When registering the vehicle back in use with a sticker, it must be reported here.

Cost

• 1.153 ISK paid when number plates are handed in for storage or when registering a vehicle out of use with a sticker. The plates are stored for one year.

• The storage fee must be paid again if the number plates need to be stored for more than one year. If the fee is not paid, the plates will be destroyed.
