Number plates handed in for storage
Vehicles can be temporarily registered as out of use by handing in the number plates to the Icelandic Transport Authority or an inspection station. If a vehicle has two number plates, both must be handed in. If one of the plates is missing, a new plate must be ordered when the other plate is handed in. Road tax is not charged while a vehicle is registered as out of use, and insurance can be cancelled for vehicles that are registered in general use.
Out of use with a sticker
If a number plate cannot be removed from a vehicle, it can be registered as out of use with a sticker. A sticker saying „Usage forbidden“ must be applied over the inspection sticker on the number plate. Road tax and inspection fines are not charged while a vehicle is registered as out of use with a sticker. However, it can not be guaranteed that insurance can be cancelled and it is recommended that the registered owner or keeper contacts their insurance company for further information.
Please note
It is prohibited to use a vehicle that is registered as out of use.
It is not possible to register a vehicle as out of use retroactively.
When registering an electric, hydrogen, or plug-in hybrid vehicle as out of use, the odometer reading must be provided.
Cost
1.153 ISK paid upon handing in number plates for storage or delivery of stickers. Number plates are kept in storage for one year.
Storage fees must be paid again if the number plates need to be stored for more than one year. If the fee is not paid, the plates will be destroyed.
