Reading Room

The National Archives’ reading room is on Laugavegur 162, first floor. Walk in from Laugavegur. The reading room is for those who want to view documents that are kept at the museum.

Documents Delivered to the Reading Room

To view documents in a reading room, a request must be sent at least 24 hours in advance so that they can be processed. Requests must be in writing and according to the archives records or the instructions of the archivist. Otherwise, it is expected that the documents will not be delivered. Documents are available on the next working day or according to agreement. In the case of a large amount of documents, there may be delays in the delivery. The most appropriate way is to send a request by e-mail to upplysingar@skjalasafn.is

Rules for Document Access

Anyone can gain access the archives that are kept in the National Archives through the library’s reading room.

There are several, but important, exceptions that restrict public access to the archives, and this is especially the case for documents that contain information on sensitive matters of individuals or matters of public interest. The access to documents that are kept in the National Archives is subject to legal provisions for national archives 77/2014, or legal provisions 140/2012 if the documents are under 30 years old. Together the legislation forms a comprehensive framework for the publics right to information.

Access to documents containing information on personal and financial matters of individuals is limited for 80 years from the creation of the documents, but access to the main census, the priestly ministry books and the parish census is permitted after 50 years have passed since the records were recorded.

In addition, access to medical records and other records of personal health information may not be granted until 100 years have passed since the last entry in the records. Finally, access may be limited for 40 years in the case of active, important public interest information.
