Services and Operations

The National Archives of Iceland is a cultural and administrative institution that preserves documents on the history of the nation and leads the government's archives and records management.

The National Archives of Iceland (NI) is the largest collection of original sources on the history of society in Iceland, it also conducts research on Icelandic history and archives. The National Archives of Iceland collects sources on the history of the nation, both public and private documents, disseminates the sources it preserves and ensures public access to them.

As an administrative agency, the National Archives is the state archives that all government agencies, offices, companies and companies that receive public funding are obliged to return their documents to. Municipalities that do not operate their own regional archives are also obliged to submit their documents to the National Archives.

The National Archives of Iceland handles supervision and advice on all public records, publishes rules and instructions and conducts courses on records management and archives. Furthermore, the National Archives of Iceland handles teaching in applied archives at the University of Iceland.
