Education

The National Archives handles supervision and advice on all public records, publishes rules and instructions and conducts courses on records management and archives. Furthermore, the National Archives handles teaching in applied archives at the University of Iceland.

Courses

The National Archives provides education to the parties that are required to submit documents on archiving and records management. The museum publishes guidebooks, educational- and tutorial videos and organizes regular seminars and conferences on archiving and records management. In addition, the museum's experts advise the parties that are required to submit documents on all public archiving and records management that relates to the handling of the data that has not yet been submitted to the museum's archives.

Applied Document Management at the University of Iceland

Diploma in Applied Document Management is a 30 credit program for those who have completed a bachelor's degree in any discipline. This diploma is designed for students interested in working with document management and archival practices, whether in public institutions, government archives, or private companies. The program is available for remote learning as well

The program covers both classical and modern methods for managing data, from their creation to their reliable storage or disposal. New emphasis and attitudes in archival studies, including the use and preservation of electronic documents, are also discussed, and emphasis is placed on the documentary value of documents and their use.

The course is taught in collaboration between the National Archives and the University of Iceland, which dates back to 1985. Originally, one course was taught in a history course, but in 2011 it became a secondary course in BA. Since 2020, practical documentation has been taught as a 30 credit post graduate diploma
