CEO and Executive Management

The main role of the CEO is to ensure that the Landspitali University Hospital provides the most comprehensive healthcare services possible at any given time, in accordance with the institution's role within the healthcare system. The CEO shall work to ensure that the hospital fulfills its mission regarding service, education, and research, and shall, among other things, maintain a strong collaboration with the academic community.

Runólfur Pálsson, CEO

Runólfur Pálsson took over as CEO of the National University Hospital on March 1, 2022. The CEO of the Landspitali - University Hospital is appointed by the Minister of Health for a term of five years at a time.

Key responsi­bilities

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee the overall management of Landspítali.

  • Attend meetings of the board of the Landspítali, unless the board decides otherwise in individual cases.

  • Prepare an organizational chart for the hospital in consultation with the executive management, if such exists, the board of the hospital, and its professional advisory committee, and submit a proposal for presentation to the Minister of Health.

  • Develop an annual operational and budget plan for the hospital in consultation with the executive management and the board of the hospital.

  • Create three-year plans for the hospital in collaboration with the executive management, the board of the hospital, and in accordance with the Public Finance Act No. 123/2015.

  • Manage the daily operations of the hospital, hire staff, and be responsible for human resources management.

  • Ensure that staffing is in accordance with the hospital's role.

  • Work on innovations and improvements in the hospital's operations with a focus on service quality.

  • Promote quality development and performance evaluation in the hospital's work.

  • Work on coordinating service components.

  • Facilitate the hospital's involvement in internships in healthcare professions in collaboration with educational institutions and other healthcare organizations.

  • Foster teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration with other healthcare institutions.

  • Undertake other tasks assigned to the CEO by health authorities.
