Hyperbaric and Dive Medicine Department
Emergency Diver Recompression
Emergency Hyperbaric Treatment
Immediate response for diving-related and other medical emergencies
Hyperbaric recompression treatment is provided for decompression illness and other emergency conditions when clinically indicated.
Treatment is tailored to the diver’s symptoms, dive profile, and medical condition. Critical care inside the chamber is available, and the medical team is trained in advanced hyperbaric and intensive care support.

Emergency Treatment Process
If hyperbaric treatment is indicated, the Emergency Department contacts the diving physician.
A medical evaluation is performed to determine the appropriate recompression protocol and identify any contraindications.
Additional laboratory tests may be required before and/or after treatment.

A fast and appropriate response is critical in the event of a diving accident. This guide was developed in collaboration with pre-hospital emergency medical services and the 112 emergency line.
We recommend printing the guide in colour, laminating it, and placing it in easily accessible locations such as dive centre offices and vehicles. A pocket-sized version should also be kept in first aid kits and with dive equipment.
We encourage dive centres to ensure this information is available to all divers.
