Responding to unexpected deterioration
The patient hotel received 81% in the building’s design certification and was therefore awarded an “Excellent” rating according to the BREEAM system. This is the highest rating a building has received in BREEAM design certification in Iceland.
The assessment considered environmental management, health and wellbeing, energy, transport, water, building materials, waste, land use, ecology, and pollution. Particular attention was given to aspects that improve the building’s indoor environment, especially air quality and the choice of building materials such as flooring, ceiling materials, paint, adhesives, and varnishes. These materials contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as formaldehyde, below specified limits. The project also scored highly for access to sustainable transport, including good facilities for cyclists and electric car charging stations.
