Straumurinn (X-Road)
What does an institution have to do?
It is important that there is a clear purpose behind an application for membership in Straumurinn and the setup of X-Road security servers. The purpose should be linked to specific projects, such as the implementation of services from Digital Iceland.
When a public entity has defined the purpose and assessed the scope of projects related to the implementation, the next step is to send a request for cooperation to Digital Iceland, which provides guidance and assistance with the implementation.
Application process for Straumurinn
Public entities wishing to connect to Straumurinn send a request for collaboration to Digital Iceland.
The application should be submitted by a person in a position of responsibility within the applicant organization (preferably a registered signatory), as the legitimacy of the application must be verified. It is crucial that trust exists between the cooperating parties, and therefore necessary that the applicant is supported and known to its management.
The application must also specify both managerial and technical points of contact for the project.Application received and approved by Digital Iceland
Following the application, Digital Iceland offers a general introduction to Straumurinn / X-Road for applicants and evaluates the application.
Upon approval, a decision must be made regarding the setup, operational arrangement, and hosting of the X-Road security servers that the applicant intends to use, whether within their own environment or with the help of a third party.
Note: Digital Iceland advises against certain types of security server operation, as they may complicate the functioning of Straumurinn.Installation, certificate application, and authentication of security servers
The applicant sets up the security servers they intend to use, either independently or in collaboration with a third party.
After installation, the security servers must be registered in the Central Component (Miðjan) to connect them to Straumurinn. "Miðjan" refers to the central service components necessary for the operation and security of the data exchange system.
The current operator of the Central Component is OK, which provides applicants with the necessary certificates and information to authenticate the servers in Straumurinn.
Note: The request to register the security servers with OK must come from the applicant’s technical contact, as specified in the cooperation application to Digital Iceland.
Design and development of web services
The applicant is responsible for the development, maintenance, and operation of their web services connected to Straumurinn (X-Road). The applicant registers these services in their security server and can grant access to other Straumurinn members if they choose to, or connect to services offered by other members, as applicable.
Note: The design and implementation of web services is a separate process, unrelated to this application and registration process. However, Digital Iceland recommends that those intending to offer web services through Straumurinn familiarize themselves with the Web Services Policy of Digital Iceland.
