Digital licenses allow users to provide proof of rights with their mobile phone in a suitable and safe way, even if a printed license is forgotten or lost.

Digital licenses are implemented by Digital Iceland for public entities that issue them. Digital licenses are digital versions of licenses based on certain user rights. Examples of these include driver's licenses, heavy machinery operator licenses, firearms permits, and disability licenses. The implementation of digital licenses consists of two components for the user:

1. Displaying an overview of certain rights in the Island.is app and on My pages on Island.is, as well as the possibility to retrieve a digital certificate for saving to a smartphone.

2. Version of a digital certificate stored in Apple Wallet on iPhone or SmartWallet on Android.

Additionally, the license scanner built into the Iceland.is app can be used to verify that other users' digital licenses are valid and authentic.

This provides increased security that surpasses what most plastic licenses can offer today.
