Development of digital certificates

The issue of digital driving licences by public institutions in Iceland began in the summer of 2020. Digital driving licences were first issued for Android and Apple smartphones. The main aspects of the development of digital driving licences by the institutions in collaboration with Digital Iceland can be seen below, along with significant events where digital licences have been used.

2020

  • Regulation makes digital driving licences equivalent to plastic cards in Iceland

  • Issue of digital driving licences begins (June)

  • Issue of digital machine operation licenses and ADR cards beginning (November)

2021

  • Digital driving licences as valid ID at polling stations in general elections (September)

  • Digital IDs are verified by scanning at polling stations and by the police

2022

  • First version of the Ísland.is app released (March)

  • Digital certificates available through the Ísland.is app

  • Digital certificates verification with the Iceland.is app

  • Digital driving licences used at polling stations in municipal elections (May)

  • Issue of digital firearms licenses begins (October)

2023

  • Issue of digital disability cards begins (April)

  • Lliquor stores start accepting digital driving licences with scanning in all stores

2024

  • Digital driving licences used at polling stations in presidential and general elections

  • Issue of digital hunting licenses begins (April)

2025

  • Digital certificates with barcodes and a picture published in the Ísland.is app (March)

  • Issue of certificates in Wallet apps on mobile phones stopped (May)

  • Issue of certificates in mobile wallet apps permanently suspended (August)
