Getting a firearms license

It should be kept in mind that no one may acquire or use firearms except with the permission of firearms. Furthermore, no one may go hunting unless they have a valid firearms licence and a valid hunting card.

How do I get a firearms permit?

Conditions for granting of firearms licenses:

• To have reached the age of 20 years and not been deprived of personal competence.

• Not to have violated the provisions of the Penal Code, the Alcohol Act, the Narcotic Drugs Act, the Act on Arms, or the Act on Protection, Conservation, and Hunting of Wild Birds and Wild Mammals.

• To have sufficient knowledge to use firearms, be mentally healthy, and otherwise be competent to use and possess firearms.

Suppose the commissioner of police considers, after examining the application and supporting documentation and the considerations he/she deems necessary, that the application for a license may be granted. In that case, the applicant shall take a course in the use and handling of firearms and pass an examination after completing the course.

About the course

• Students must begin preparation at least two weeks before the course.

• Apply for a license to participate in a firearms handling course with the police (see above).

• Applying for a medical certificate in connection with firearms licenses to a general practitioner.

• Get two references. You need their ID number and phone number for the application. They may not necessarily have their own firearms licence, but they must be twenty years old.

• Sign up for courses.

• Transfer the course fees immediately upon registration. If an applicant is rejected by the police, you can request reimbursement of course fees.

• For the game card course: Read the book Hunting for Wild Birds and Mammals, e. Einar Guðmann.

• For the firearms course: Read the Firearms Manual, Einar Guðmann.

• It is encouraged to take exercise time at an authorized fireplace with guidance from a member of the respective launch company.

• If the number of seats on a course is registered more than the number of seats, those who first complete the payment of course fees and submit data to the police shall take the initiative.
