Social security payments are proportional to residence in Iceland. Persons who have stayed and/or worked abroad may be entitled to pension payments in the country in question. The Social Insurance Administration provides further information on foreign rights and handles applications for such payments.

Foreign nationals who have lived and/or worked in Iceland for at least three years may be entitled to an old-age pension from the Social Insurance Administration. Full entitlement to an old-age pension in Iceland is based on 40 years of residence and those who have lived in Iceland for at least 3 years from the age of 16 to 67 have rights. The rights of those who have lived in Iceland for less than 40 years are calculated pro rata based on their residence in Iceland.
