Cash sickness benefits for home birth

Iceland Health pays cash sickness benefits to the mother for 10 days after the birth at home. 

What is the process like? 

  • You ask the midwife for a certificate of a home birth. 

  • You apply electronically on application button here above.

  • You upload the certificate in the application. It is sufficient that there is a clear picture of the certificate. 

  • Applications are generally processed in 4 to 6 weeks.  

  • Full per diem payments are paid for 10 days. 

  • Child supplement is paid for dependent children under the age of 18.  

Note that sickness benefits are taxable. If you want to use personal tax credit, you must register the use of your tax card under Register personal tax credit. Iceland Health employees are not allowed to register tax cards for individuals. 

Who can receive cash sickness benefits for a home birth? 

  • Individuals who have given birth at home. 

  • Individuals who have been covered by health insurance in Iceland. 

  • Individuals who are over 16 years of age.  

  • Individuals who have legal residence in Iceland.
