Cash sickness benefits for alcohol and drug treatment

Iceland Health may pay half cash sickness benefits payments to an individual undergoing alcohol or drug treatment. 

  • The cash sickness benefits payments are only paid while the applicant is hospitalised or in a day ward. 

  • There is no payment for outpatient treatment.  

  • Cash sickness benefits are only paid to individuals undergoing approved alcohol and drug treatment in Iceland. There is no payment for treatments abroad.  

Cash sickness benefits due to illness 

If you are entitled to cash sickness benefits due to illness, it is better for you to apply for them.  

Why? 

  • You may be paid a higher amount. 

  • The period in which you will be paid may be longer. 

  • You can apply to extend the period. 

What is the process like? 

  • You ask the treatment institution to obtain a sickness per diem certificate.  

  • You apply.  

  • You upload the certificate in the application. It is sufficient that there is a clear picture of the certificate. 

  • Applications are generally processed in 4 to 6 weeks.  

  • Iceland Health pays half per diem payments from the 15th day that an individual is hospitalized and in day care.  

  • Child supplement is paid for children under the age of 18 who are supported by the applicant. 

Note that sickness benefits are taxable. If personal tax credit is to be used, the use of the tax card must be registered under Register personal tax credit. Iceland Health employees are not allowed to register tax cards for individuals. 

Who can receive cash sickness benefits for treatment? 

  • Those who have been in approved alcohol and drug treatment in Iceland. 

  • Those who have been covered by health insurance in Iceland. 

  • Those who are over 16 years of age.  

  • Those who have legal residence in Iceland.  

While you are receiving cash sickness benefits, you may not receive: 

  • Wages from the employer. 

  • Payments from the Maternity/Paternity Leave Fund. 

  • Payments from the Directorate of Labour. 

  • Payments of accident per diem payments. 

  • Full pension payments from Tryggingastofnun.
