Additional driving license

Apply for a study permit from the District Commissioner. Bring a doctors note and a new passport photo if the driver´s license has not been renewed since 2013. It is necessary to meet the requirements for permanent residence in Iceland and hold a permanent driving license.

Find a driving school that offers courses for additional driving rights/commercial driving license. Information about the cost is available on the driving schools´ websites.

Theoretical courses are offered in distance learning or on-site learning. First aid can never be done in distance learning.

Everybody take the basic theoretical courses:

• Traffic science- 12 lessons

• Traffic psychology - 12 lessons

• First aid - 16 lessons

• Car technology - 12 lessons

Theoretical test at Frumherji. The validation of the test is 12 months. Rembember to bring the driving ecucation journal.

Candidates take the part of the specialized subjects that relates to the category the intend to take their qualification. Tests are taken in the driving schools from the subjects.

A practical driving test is taken at Frumherji. A driving instructor registers the candidate for the test. A practical test must be taken for each driver´s license category.

The test time for categories D, D1 with commercial passenger transport rights is approximately 75 minutes. The driving time in traffic must be a minimum of 60 minutes.

The test time for categories C, C1 and D1 is approximately 55 minutes. The driving time in traffic must be a minimum of 45 minutes.
