Additional driving rights, entitlements and age limits

Commercial motor vehicle (B/Far)

The age of entitlement is 20 years old (21 years old for driving a taxi)

Gives the right to drive a taxi for up to 8 passengers or a small van, for commercial purposes P(for fee). The total trailer weight is 750 kg and the BE entitlement has to be added in order to be allowed to drive with more weight.

Lorry and trailer (C1 and C1E)

The age of entitlement for C1 and C1E, but 18 years.

• Category C1: A vehicle between 3500 and 7500 kg maximum authorised mass with a trailer up to 750 kg. In order to be able to tow heavier trailers/coupling devices, C1E rights have to be taken.

• Category C1E: A vehicle of category C1 with a trailer having a total weight exceeding 750 kg. However, the combined gross weight of both vehicles may not exceed 12,000 kg.

Truck and trailer (C and CE)

The age of entitlement for C and CE is 21 years.

• Category C: A vehicle with a weight exceeding 7,500 kg. C Category also entitles to drive the vehicle with a trailer having a maximum authorised weight of 750 kg or less.

• Category CE: Entitles to drive a vehicle in category C with a trailer with a gross weight exceeding 750 kg.

Minibus and trailer (D1 and D1E)

The age of entitlement for D1 and D1E is 21 years.

• Category D1: A vehicle with no more than 16 passenger seats. A person holding D1 rights may drive with a trailer/coupling device of 750 kg or less up to the maximum allowed weight.

• Category D1E: A vehicle

  • in category B with a trailer in category BE

  • in category D1 with a trailer with a gross weight exceeding 750 kg; however, the combined gross weight of both vehicles may not exceed 12,000 kg.

Large bus and trailer (D and DE)

The age of entitlement for D and DE is 23.

• Category D: A bus for more than 8 passengers plus a driver. A person holding D licences may be combined with a trailer/coupling device having a maximum authorised weight of 750 kg or less.

• Category DE: After qualification D, it is possible to take on an additional DE, giving the right to drive a group D bus with a trailer weighing more than 750 kg in total weight. Students who take a trailer licence in category DE and these rights also apply to CE.
