Recognition of interpreters for driving tests

If the applicant speaks and understands neither Icelandic nor a foreign language, the test is requested, he/she must have a certified interpreter for theoretical and practical test or an interpreter approved by the Icelandic Transport Authority.

The applicant shall bear the cost of interpretation. An employed driving instructor may not be an interpreter.

Requirements for interpreters in theoretical driving tests:

  • An interpreter shall have a diploma in interpreting or a university degree in interpreting.

  • An interpreter shall have a good reputation. In assessing his/her reputation, it shall be considered whether the person has committed criminal acts which give rise to doubts about his/her ability to act as an interpreter or indicate that the person does not have the necessary trust to be able to perform the job.

  • The Icelandic Transport Authority reserves the right to evaluate the individual applicants' CV with regard to the abovementioned requirements.

A request for the approval of an interpreter for theoretical driving tests shall be sent by e-mail to okurettindi@samgongustofa.is

Supporting documents: CV with references, copies of diplomas, criminal record.
