Annual accident registration reports

The Icelandic Transportation Authority (Tryggingastofa) compiles information that is used for analysis of road safety issues in Iceland and for policy in the fight for improved road safety.

Governmental objectives in Iceland regarding road safety

  • That the number of traffic deaths per 100,000 inhabitants will not exceed the lowest in other countries by 2034.

  • That the number of people killed and seriously injured in traffic will decrease by 5% per year by 2034.

  • The baseline for the second objective is the average for the years 2015-2019.

Some details from accident report 2024

  • 13 people died in 10 fatal accidents.

  • Three foreign tourists died, but no foreign citizens resided in Iceland.

  • Nine men and four women died, while the 17 drivers involved in fatal accidents were all men.

  • One person died on foot, one died on a motorcycle and one died on a tractor. Two died in a van and eight died in a passenger car.
