Certification of electrical contractors

If you meet the requirements for education and work experience, you can apply for certification as an electrical contractor on My pages HMS. You choose the type of certification your want, fill in your personal information and whether the activity is in your kennitala (id.no.) or a company’s.

Conditions on education and work experience

To get certification as an electrical contractor you must have at least 2 years of work experience in designing, commissioning and/or erecting installations (high-voltage or low-voltage) and your education must meet one the following requirements:

• A journeyman’s certificate as an electrician and a diploma as an electrical technician from Reykjavík University (formerly the Tækniháskóli Íslands and Tækniskóli Íslands) or another certified college, followed by at least two years of experience in work related to design and/or erection of high or low-voltage installations.

• A journeyman’s certificate as an electrician and have graduated a master electrician from a certified trade school or have an equivalent education according to the evaluation of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, followed by at least two years of experience in work related to design and/or erection of high or low-voltage installations.

• A degree in electrical power engineering from a certified college or technical college and two years of experience in work related to design and/or erection of high or low-voltage installations.

Supporting documents

• Confirmation of education (journeymans’s certificate or diploma as applicable).

• Confirmation of work experience after obtaining a journeyman’s certificate and/or diploma, signed by employer.

• A certificate from the Administration of Occupational Safety and Health (Vinnueftirlitið) on facilities (work shop, access to kitchen and restroom).

If you feel it is necessary you can fill in more information in the application, for example explanations of studies abroad. At the end you need to confirm that you will work according to the required safety control system.

When you have submitted your application you will receive confirmation of receipt by email. If any information is missing, HMS will contact you by email.

Application approved

As soon as the application has been approved you will receive an email. The next step is to get an inspection agency to inspect your safety control system. The inspection agency will submit a report on your system directly to HMS. If there are comments in the report, HMS will contact you. When you have made the necessary corrections you send information on that to HMS.

You will receive an email when the certification document is ready, and a claim will be sent to your bank. When you have paid the licencing fee, we will email an electronic version of the document to you and a few days later you will receive the printed document by mail.

If you do not meet the conditions or some data is missing or needs further explanation, you will be contacted by email.

Cost

The fee for issuing certification is12.000 ISK
