Time of birth

It is not possible to say with certainty when the birth time was registered, but from 1956 it has become quite systematic. Before that time it seems that it was up to each midwife or institution whether the time of birth was registered. As this information is part of the mothers health information there are restrictions on access to this area. However it is possible to provide information on the time of birth of each individual if they are available.

In order to find reports of childbirths, you need to know at which maternity home or hospital the child was born. If the child was born at home, the name of the midwife and the local authority (Reykjavík/kauptún) must be given. The name of the mother, her birth date and the birth date of the child must also be given.
