Divorce proceedings

Information on divorce permits issued before 1 July 1993 is still available at the Ministry of Justice. Divorce permits were issued by the District Commissioners after that time and some of those data has been deposited in the National Archives.

Permits to divorce at the table and bed and related supporting documents are more likely to be kept in the National Archives than the District Commissioners have overseen in that area. Supporting documents usually include documents such as certificates of reconciliation and agreements on visitation or financial transactions. If you request a divorce permit that is under 30 years of age, you can contact the relevant district commissioner office and get information on the case number.
