If there is difference between the Icelandic version and the English, the Icelandic version is valid.
All crew members on Icelandic ships must have completed safety courses at the Maritime Safety and Survival Training Centre or at another recognised training provider.
Purpose of safety education
In order to meet the requirements of the STCW and STCW-F Conventions on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping, the Act on Ship Crews states that all seamen and seafarers are required to undertake appropriate courses in safety and survival at the Maritime Safety and Survival Training Centre or another recognised training provider.
Role
The role of the Maritime Safety and Survival Training Centre is to hold courses for active and future seamen and seafarers and students of masters' and deck officers' education and marine engineer´s education on maritime safety and rescue matters. The Maritime Safety and Survival Training Centre was established in 1985 and is operated by the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue according to a special Act on the Training Centre.
Objectives of the Maritime Safety and Survival Training Centre
To enhance the safety of seamen through training in rescue and the use of safety equipment and through general education on accident prevention at sea.
To continuously improve the provision of safety education to Icelandic seamen.
To emphasise that the school's courses and services always meet the expectations of the students.
To assist crews in safety matters on board their ships.
To be an active participant in the development of maritime safety.
To provide compulsory seafarer safety training courses under the STCW Convention, appropriate to the requirements of the Icelandic fleet of ships.
Ensure the safety of students in courses by applying preventive measures.
