Inspection bodies

Accreditation of inspection bodies

The technical part of the ship inspection is carried out by privately accredited inspection bodies. Inspection laboratories are divided into three categories:

  1. A-accredited inspection bodies

  2. Service providers of ship''s equipment (not an accreditation requirement)

  3. Classification societies.

In addition, it is the statutory role of the Icelandic Transportation Authority to ensure safety at sea, to carry out certification and to supervise and cooperate with the inspection agencies.

Over 30 larger unclassified ships and certain passenger ships are inspected by the Icelandic Transport Agency due to special EU requirements.
