Operations of Freshwater Fisheries Associations

Management plan

For the utilisation of salmon and trout fishing rights, freshwater fisheries associations and fishing rights holders are required to prepare a management plan. The objective of the plan is to ensure the sustainable use of fisheries resources within the relevant river basin or water system.

Content of the Management Plan

The management plan shall set out rules on fishing pressure and the conduct of fishing activities. This includes, among other things, information on:

  • The number of rods permitted for fishing.

  • The annual fishing period.

  • The daily fishing period.

  • The permitted number of fish landed.

  • Size restrictions for fish that may be landed.

  • Permitted bait.

  • The arrangements for net fishing.

  • Protection (closure) of specific fishing areas.

  • Biological criteria that support sustainable management.

Approval of the Utilisation Plan

  • The freshwater fisheries association or fishing rights holder submits a draft management plan to the Directorate of Fisheries.

  • The Directorate of Fisheries requests an opinion from the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute on the plan.

  • The Directorate of Fisheries approves the management plan if it is considered capable of ensuring sustainable utilisation of the relevant water system.
