Sign language research

The Icelandic sign language is one of the world's sign languages. Sign languages are not international, they are spontaneous languages that arise through the communication of deaf people.

Icelandic Sign Language is the only traditional minority language that has its origin in Iceland and is one of two legally protected languages in the country.

About 300 people regard it as their first language, but many more use Icelandic sign language in their daily lives, such as families and friends of deaf people and individuals working in the sign language community.
