The sooner breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the prognosis.

• Most symptoms are not signs of cancer, but it’s important to have them checked .

Breast cancer is uncommon in women under 40, but all patients should be aware of potential symptoms.

Seek medical advice if you notice any changes in your breasts or other symptoms

It’s important to have symptoms assessed as soon as possible to determine whether further tests are needed. Examples of symptoms that need to be monitored:

• Changes in the nipple, such as inversion

• Rash, scaly skin or a sore that doesn’t heal on or around the nipple

• Discharge from the nipple

• Skin texture changes, for example dimpling

• Changes in the size or shape of the breast

• Redness, warmth, swelling or colour changes in the skin

Women with known risk-related gene mutations (such as BRCA, CHEK2, ATM, etc.) or a strong family history of breast cancer, and therefore an increased lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, are offered individualised risk monitoring through the Breast Centre at Landspítali.

These women do not participate in the general screening program but instead receive targeted examinations and regular follow-up by breast surgeons and specialists at Landspítali.

There is no need for screening when all breast tissue has been removed. Follow-up is provided by breast surgeons.

They are followed by an oncologist for five years after treatment according to Landspítali's protocol but may return to routine screening after that. Women who have not reached the screening age five years after cancer treatment will continue with annual follow-up by an oncologist until they reach the age for regular screening.

They can participate in routine screening, and we strongly encourage women with breast implants to attend. Mammography is a safe examination for women with breast implants.
