Genetic counselling

Genetic counselling is a process in which individuals and families receive support in understanding genetics and the consequences of hereditary diseases.

Genetic counseling

  • Genetic counselling is based on conversations between a genetic counsellor and the client.

  • During these conversations, information is provided about:

    • Genetics

    • Hereditary diseases

    • Genetic risk factors

  • The goal is to help individuals and families:

    • Understand which factors may affect their health

    • Learn what tests may be relevant

    • Explore what options and resources are available

  • During genetic counselling:

    • The person’s medical and family history is reviewed

    • Based on this information, an assessment is made of whether and how genetics may be related to a condition

    • Possible tests, their results, and how these results may affect follow-up and/or treatment are discussed

Appointments for genetic counseling are booked through the Landspítali app. You can find the app in the App Store for iPhone and on Google Play for Android.
