For Whom
The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department at Landspítali provides various specialized services for children and adolescents up to 18 years of age with complex mental health issues.
The People Providing the Service
At BUGL, professionals from many fields work together, including doctors, psychologists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, art therapists, nursing assistants, and health and medical secretaries. In addition, counselors with diverse education and experience work in the inpatient unit.
Within the acute services of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department at Landspítali, there is a specialized acute team whose role is to assess the severity of a child's acute mental health issues, such as suicidal risk, psychotic symptoms, symptoms of bipolar disorder, and/or acute severe depression.
Operations
At barna- og unglingageddeild, there are outpatient, day, and inpatient units. The teams work in a multidisciplinary manner on assessment and treatment, and they also provide counseling and education. The services are tailored to the needs of children and their families.
The vast majority receive services solely in the outpatient unit. Admissions to the inpatient unit for children and adolescents are utilized when specialized assessment and/or treatment is needed beyond what can be provided in the outpatient setting.

Services for Professionals
There is significant collaboration with those who conduct initial assessments, such as primary care and social services, as well as other professionals who work with the child and family in their immediate environment. Emphasis is placed on compassion in communication and good cooperation with parents/guardians.
During business hours, the acute team receives calls from professionals to assess the need for the team's involvement. Outside of business hours, acute services are provided on standby.
General phone consultations regarding children's illnesses are available at Health Care Centers and at 1700 around the clock.
Referral to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services
If a mental health problem is suspected in a child or adolescent, parents often begin by contacting professionals in their immediate environment, such as primary healthcare, social services, or school psychological services, who can refer to the service.
Suggestions and Complaints
If parents/guardians have suggestions or complaints regarding the treatment or services for their child, they can contact the service manager, department head, or chief physician at 543 4300 at the outpatient clinic of BUGL.
