Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department
For children and teenagers coming to their first interview
Velcome to the barna- og unglingageddeild outpatient ward.
Here we will try to answer any questions you might have about what happens here at our barna- og unglingageddeild outpatient clinic.
About BUGL
Barna- og unglingageddeild is one of the two pediatric wards at Landspítali, the other is the Children’s Hospital of Hringurinn.
At barna- og unglingageddeild we meet children and adolescents who have mental difficulties while children who have physical difficulties go to the children’s hospital
Examples of treatment for physical problems are crutches, bandages or surgery, but at barna- og unglingageddeild we mainly use questions, conversations and sometimes medicine
Reasons for referring a child/adolescent to barna- og unglingageddeild outpatient ward are many and varied.
Sometimes there are kids who feel unwell and feel anxious and sad and sometimes the kids are not doing well with communication at home and in school.
These are some of the things we are used to working with at barna- og unglingageddeild outpatient ward.
First interview in the outpatient department BUGL
Good cooperation between you, your parents and us is very important. When you come to the first interview, your parents should always be involved, preferably both but at least the parent you live with. This is for us to get to know you and hear everyone who has the problem and how you can be helped.
Usually the first interview takes about one to one and a half hours and you always meet the case manager who will be your main contact at barna- og unglingageddeild and will be the one you call if you need information or need to discuss anything that concerns your treatment.
We usually start the first interview with everyone sitting down together and chatting for a short while. Then, once everyone has met, the child/adolescent is usually left with the case manager and chatting with him in private.
Then the child/adolescent goes on and waits for a while while while the parents come for an interview with the case manager. Then information regarding e.g. pregnancy, birth, when you started walking, talking, eating and various things in that door is usually reviewed.
The interview ends with a reunion and the next steps are reviewed before going home.
Next Steps
After the interview, the case manager will review the documents that have come with the reference to barna- og unglingageddeild, for example psychological reports and lists filled out by parents and schools, along with lists that you have filled out in the interview with the case manager. Then the next steps are decided.
You often get time with the doctor of the team you belong to or you get time for individual interviews, depending on what is convenient for you. The interviews usually take an hour.
Barna- og unglingageddeild also offers many and different group treatments depending on the problem being worked on.
You will usually have an information meeting with your parents and the school staff who have been supporting you, to show what they think is wrong and also to get cooperation on what could be done differently.
How much we do at barna- og unglingageddeild depends on the nature of the problem you are dealing with. Sometimes it is necessary to admit children/adolescents to the outpatient ward but usually not during the first interview.
The graduation
When you start to feel better and behave better, we will evaluate the case again and decide on discharge from barna- og unglingageddeild.
The duration of our services varies greatly, from a few weeks or months to several years. In some cases we maintain the cooperation until the person is 18 years old and support the person in appropriate health and social services or elsewhere.
If you have any questions, please write them down or try to remember them and then ask when you come to our first interview.
Hopefully, we will be successful in our work together.
We'll see you when you come for the first interview.
