Icelandic medical students (or students with ties to Iceland) studying abroad are offered to apply for a practical study place in medicine and surgery in the following calendar weeks;

• Spring season: weeks 13-14 and 17-22

• Summer season: weeks 23-35

• Autumn series: weeks 50-52 + week 1

Application period for practical training

• The spring season is until 31 September

• The summer season is until 31 December

• A summer surgery school will be available in the field of surgery from 12-23 August 2024. The deadline for applications is 28 February 2024 -

• The season opens on 30 April

Evaluation of applications

Consider the following factors:

• Insufficient applications will not be considered, if:

  • application forms are not completed

  • missing supporting data

  • the application period has passed.

• If applications are evaluated equally and space is not sufficient, a lottery will be thrown.

Work placements in obstetrics and gynecology are offered twice a year.

• 3 weeks in January

• about 10 weeks in the summer.

Application period for practical training

• in some cases, are assessed in January and must be received by December 31.

• in January are assessed in June and must be submitted by May 31.

Applications received after the application deadline have passed, will only be evaluated if space permits. The minimum application period is 2 weeks.

Evaluation of applications

The following factors will be taken into account when evaluating applications:

Participation of apprentices

The requirements are that students attend and participate in the work of the women's department and that students report illnesses and other incidents to the supervisors of the program. It is not assumed that students will pursue other work alongside the vocational program.

The practical training takes place in all departments of the women’s department and each student is allowed to attend all of them:

• Birth watch, often 12 hours

• Pregnancy and postpartum ward

• Maternity Care Care Care Unit

• Embryology Department (sons)

• Emergency services for women's departments (night shifts)

• Women's Medical Center

• Women's Medical Care Outpatient Clinic

• Emergency Medical Center for Women

• Surgical centre

Practical training is offered at Hringur Children's Hospital, and students enrolled in foreign universities are accepted three times a year:

• Late May to mid-June (date chosen based on when most applicants wish to start their practical training).

• Early July.

• Mid-December.

Students can apply for practical training at Hringur Children's Hospital outside of these advertised dates. Such applications will be assessed separately. A condition for acceptance is that they attend the advertised reception day for students and receive an introduction to the training and hospital rotations. This introduction takes about an hour.

Application Deadlines

• Applications for summer positions must be received by December 31st. Applications will be evaluated in January.

• Applications for December positions must be received by May 31st. Applications will be evaluated in June.

Applications received after the deadline will be assessed if space allows.

Intern Participation

Requirements include full attendance and full participation in the work of Hringur Children's Hospital.

• Rotations can be in different departments.

• Evening and weekend shifts.

The work week at Hringur Children's Hospital is a minimum of 40 hours. Students are not expected to hold other jobs concurrently with this training.
