The annual Icelandic Forestry Conference will be held in Hof, Akureyri, 20-21 March under the title Forest Resources - Infrastructure and Planning. About 140 people are registered to the event.

Fund for 92 projects receives funding

The largest grant from the Icelandic Agricultural Fund this year amounts to ISK 6.1 million. There were 98 applications for funding this time, and 92 projects received funding.

Icelandic forests finally on the European map

Arnór Snorrason, an expert at Land and Forest Iceland, is among the authors of an article published recently in the prestigious scientific journal Nature. The article describes the work that is currently underway to establish a joint monitoring system for Europe’s forests. Data on the biomass reserves of the European forests and the growth of the biomass there are published. Iceland is now for the first time included on a map showing such information. It can thus be said that the Icelandic forests have finally been "put on the map" in this regard.

Targeted forest management in rural areas

In an interview with Bændablaðið, Hrefna Jóhannesdóttir, Director of Agriculture and Forestry at Land and Forest, explained that forestry in rural areas has proven to be a very important and sustainable regional project. Participants are spread across the country in nearly 700 rural areas.

A group of university students from around the United States recently visited the Land and Forest Iceland research facilities in Mógilsá and learned about the agency and its subjects.

A book on soil recieves Hagthenkir honorary grant

Soil science professor Ólafur Gestur Arnalds was awarded the Hagþenkir 2024 honorary grant for his book Mold ert þú - jarðvegur og íslensk náttúra. The book was designed by Fifa Jónsdóttir, graphic designer and specialist in scientific dissemination at Land og skógur.

The gold diggers won!

The employees of Lands and forests did well in the national campaign Lífshlaupið, which has just ended. The institution was placed eighth in the category of institutions with 70-149 employees. Thirteen teams showed up for the Lands and forests game and the team The Gold Diggers showed the best performance.

Wetland restoration discussed

The state of wetlands in Iceland is not adequate and we have not been paying enough attention to them, says Ágústa Helgadóttir, project manager for wetlands restoration at Land and Forest Iceland. By 2025, she estimates that about a thousand hectares of wetland will have been restored.
