This resource is a component of Land and Forest Iceland's mandate to lead initiatives outlined in the national planning strategy for 2024-2038. The strategy prioritises the mapping of all arable land suitable for food production.

The web viewer displays:

• Total area of mapped arable land within each municipality.

• Proportional breakdowns based on agricultural land quality.

• Information either by hectares or square kilometers.

The foundational classification of arable land for the entire country was developed by EFLA Consulting Engineering, under the oversight of Land and Forest Iceland. This classification adheres to guidelines established at the time by the Ministry of Industry and Innovation and methodologies developed at the Agricultural University of Iceland.

This map viewer presents information on Iceland's vegetation and soil resources. The Grólind project initiated monitoring of these resources in 2019, aiming to comprehensively assess their status by integrating existing data, new remote sensing data, collaborative public field surveys, and a network of measurement sites.

Under the Nature Conservation Act No. 60/2013 (as amended) and the Forests and Forestry Act No. 33/2019, Land and Forest Iceland is legally mandated to designate and register unique birch woodland areas.

In June 2025, Land and Forest Iceland published its initial nominations for unique or ecologically significant birch woodlands and their remnants, detailed in a report (in Icelandic) and geographically displayed on a dedicated online map viewer. This is an ongoing Land and Forest Iceland project, managed by a dedicated working group responsible for further designations of unique birch woodland areas.

This web map displays the total forest cover in Iceland, encompassing both naturally occurring birch forests and thickets, as well as cultivated stands. Forest land currently constitutes slightly more than two percent of the nation's land area.
