Pharmacovigilance and adverse reactions
Pharmacovigilance contributes to safer use of medicines and covers the science and activities relating to the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse reactions or any other problems related to the use of medicines or vaccines.
Before a medicine is placed on the market, it has been tested in groups of limited size, and therefore not all adverse reactions or risks associated with the medicine have come to light.
Through pharmacovigilance, the safety of medicines is continuously assessed and improved after a medicine has been placed on the market. Pharmacovigilance is the most effective and often the only way to detect very rare adverse reactions.
The results of pharmacovigilance are better information about the medicine and guidance for healthcare professionals, patients and their relatives that reduce risks and increase the benefits of using medicines.
Pharmacovigilance takes place at both national and international level. The Icelandic Medicines Agency (IMA) participates actively in the European Medicines Agency's (EMA) Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC). Close European cooperation and a shared knowledge base enable the authorities to respond quickly when necessary.
