Psychologists at the Suðurlands Health Care Centre are involved in the treatment of children and young people up to the age of 18, clients of mental health teams as well as collaboration with the infant and child health services as well as maternity care.
Primary healthcare physicians refer psychologists to the centre, so booking a doctor's appointment is the first step. Psychologists are present at most primary health centres and try to meet people as far as possible at centres in their vicinity. Specialist services at schools, childminders and upper secondary school counsellors can also refer to the service.
HSU Psychological Services
Referral for Psychological Services
A doctor at the healthcare center sends a referral for psychological services.
Psychologist Services
Treatment for children and adolescents (under 18 years old)
with mild to moderate emotional and behavioral issues. Generally, 6 to 8 sessions are provided. The healthcare center is not a long-term solution for severe mental health issues. If the condition is complex or long-term, parents are guided to appropriate resources.
Consultation sessions for parents
in cases involving young children or children with behavioral issues. Typically, 1 to 3 consultation sessions are offered.
Collaboration with parents
is always an integral part of child treatment.
Psychologists do not conduct developmental assessments such as ADHD evaluations, intelligence testing, or autism assessments.
Psychologists collaborate with midwives and nurses in maternal and infant care.
Psychologists at the HSU health centers collaborate with the center's doctors, nurses and midwives. They work in multidisciplinary teams within an organization and with other organizations.
