Don't rely on luck
The Administration of Occupational Safety and Health (AOSH) is currently running the “Don’t Rely on Luck” awareness campaign, which aims to remind people to use appropriate fall protection and safety equipment when working at height, as falls from height are one of the most common causes of fatal accidents at work in Iceland.
Falls on the same level are generally the most common cause of occupational accidents in Iceland. In construction, however, falls from height have generally been the most common cause.
Falls from height can cause serious injuries and are one of the most common causes of fatal accidents at work.
In recent years, most fatal accidents at work have occurred in construction, and most of these have been caused by falls from height.
Ensure safety
Twenty-five per cent of reported occupational accidents are caused by falls on the same level and ten per cent by falls from height. Most accidents can be prevented through appropriate preventive measures.
Construction sites, like other workplaces, must prioritise employee safety and well-being and have a risk assessment that takes account of constantly changing conditions.
Employees must follow safety rules and carry out their own risk assessment before starting work and whenever conditions change.
It is good practice to Take Five before starting any work.
Do not become complacent or rely on luck!
Always use appropriate fall protection and safety equipment, as a fall at work can have fatal consequences.
