Sound studio and reading
The library produces audio books with or without text. The library’s sound studio reads books throughout the year in four recording rooms. The books are prepared by the library’s employees and when the reading of the audio book is complete, they review the reading and finish for distribution.
The loan recipients can then access the material via an app or a website or download it. Many loan recipients use the option of Webvarp, a solution run by Blindrafélagið. There is still a small proportion of loan recipients who do not use this option and receive material sent on CDs.
Preparation, recording and reading of audiobooks
The Icelandic Audio Library is the only library in Iceland that produces the majority of its library collections. The library is read all year long, and 200-300 titles are added to the library each year, some of which are textbooks. Publication of audiobooks has been increasing in recent years, which gives the library new possibilities to acquire more material.
Reading the audio books is a paid job and in the past hundreds of audio book readers have lent their voices to the library. The readers come from all walks of life and age groups, as a diverse group is needed to deliver a wide variety of material. Those interested in getting started as audio book readers can contact the sound studio and request to come to audition.
