Book-seeking
The library has a good collection of 13.000 titles. Each year, about 4-500 audiobooks are added to the library, either read into the library, purchased as audio books by publishers or obtained through inter-collective loans. You can search for books here on the web, but also help library employees with the search and selection of books. You can also send in requests and suggestions for choosing books to read. Audio books with texts are increasing and efforts are being made to do even better in this regard.
The National Library of Iceland contributes to increased literacy and better access to literature through its activities and good accessible books, and thus participates in fulfilling the provisions of the UN Charter on the rights of disabled people and equal access to education. The library plays an important social and cultural role as well as facilitating the passage of people with impaired reading skills to printed reading.
The library is in co-operation with the Nordic countries on inter-museum loans and English books have also been bought from RNIB in the UK. The library currently has around 3,500 titles of all kinds in English and around 400 books in the Nordic languages. The library can search for English books, for example, by using the English language as a language in the audiobook search. The implementation of the Marakess Treaty has made it possible to borrow audiobooks across borders, which came into force in Iceland in 2021.
