Environmental and climate policy

Purpose and scope

The Icelandic Library of Audio is actively involved in environmental work and is committed to minimising negative environmental impacts. The library takes into account the government’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and is thus involved in the fight against climate change. The policy covers transport, procurement, waste, electricity and environmental education.

It is important that employees take an active part in environmental work, respect their environment and realize the value of handling the purchased materials well. People are encouraged to be careful about using paper and to reduce energy consumption and recycle as much as possible. The collection categorizes waste into at least 8 categories and encourages eco-friendly travel to and from work as well as keeping travel to other countries and out to the country to a minimum.

Scope

This policy covers the environmental impact of the operations of the Icelandic Audio Library and concerns all the staff of the institution. The Icelandic Audio Library has one operational facility.

Objectives

By 2030, the Hljóðbókasafn will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 45% per staff in relation to 2019 and will carbon offset all remaining emissions through the purchase of certified carbon units.

The main environmental objectives of the museum are:

1. Eco-friendly transport, offered transport contracts and electric bikes for use during working hours. 70% of employees have signed a transport contract.

2. Doing eco-friendly shopping and choosing approved environmentally friendly products.

3. Keeping energy consumption to a minimum and choosing energy-saving appliances when purchasing.

4. Sorting all waste.

5. Reduce paper consumption and disposable products.

6. To work actively to reduce the number of CDs loaned and to focus on the use of more environmentally friendly channels such as streaming, as the CDs of the museum are single use and sent by post.

7. Carbon-efficient emissions through responsible

8. Education for employees on environmental and climate issues.

Responsibility and follow-up

The director is responsible for the policy. The Green Steps contact point monitors its implementation and is responsible for the policy being reviewed annually and for its goals being updated with regard to progress and developments in greenhouse gas emissions. To measure and evaluate the environmental performance, Hljóðbókasafn participates in the Green Steps in government and maintains green accounting. All updates are submitted to the senior management for approval. This policy shall be published on the library's website.
