Legal registration of seamen in Skútan

Skútan - ship registry and seafarer´s registration system

If there is difference between the Icelandic version and the English, the Icelandic version is valid.

All crew members on all commercial vessels registered on the Icelandic Ship Registry shall be required to legally register to a vessel. Vessels may not leave harbour unless all crew members have been legally registered.

  • The ship has valid Certificate of Seaworthiness

  • Crew insurance valid

  • All crew members shall hold certificates of competency or proficiency to serve in the respective capacities

  • The ship is fully manned according to law

  • Every crew member has completed a basic safety training course (ships of 15 m in length and over) or a safety training course for small craft (boats less than 15 m in length). Those who have served less than 180 registered days in the system can obtain legal registration but need within that time to complete the aforementioned courses at the Maritime Safety Training Centre (MSSTC).

Deregistration

The master shall ensure that at the time of the termination of any period of presence on board the ship, the person concerned is deregistered in the legal register. The Icelandic Transport Authority shall deregister a seaman when the Certificate of Seaworthiness has expired, or when the ship's crew insurance has expired or when his Certificate of Competency or Proficiency has expired. The Icelandic Transport Authority shall notify the party in question that he/she has been deregistered.
