Lasers, laser pointers and IPL devices

Treatments with a high-powered laser or IPL device

Those who consider undergoing treatment with a powerful laser or IPL (intense pulsed light) device need to be aware of the potential hazards of using the devices. Therefore, it is recommended that customers be sure that the person performing such a treatment is competent and has adequate knowledge of safety issues and possible hazards. It should be kept in mind that a diploma or accreditation document that an individual has received does not guarantee the competence of a worker in handling high-powered lasers or IPL equipment.

If skin reactions are suspected or have occurred in the treatment area or elsewhere, a professional evaluation should always be obtained, by a dermatologist or another similarly qualified physician, before starting further treatment. Birthmarks should never be removed unless they have been examined by a doctor with appropriate specialist training, such as a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon.

There are examples of skin changes that are difficult to distinguish from serious diseases being treated by individuals who do not have the appropriate knowledge and training.

The use of high-powered lasers and IPL equipment for cosmetic purposes always carries some risk.

Most common damage

The most common damage caused by powerful lasers is skin burns that can take a long time to heal. Skin burn can lead to skin infection and scarring.

The eye is the organ most sensitive to lasers and IPL devices. Laser radiation can damage the retina and lead to loss of vision. Even reflection of a laser beam from a matted surface can cause damage if the laser is a Class 4 laser, the most powerful category of lasers.
