On this page
The use of powerful lasers, laser pointers and IPL devices by the general public is subject to licensing, while the import of the devices is subject to notification.
See also to those considering treatment with a high-powered laser or IPL device.
General
Laser pointers are not toys. Laser pointers can be powerful and cause acute eye damage.
Lasers, laser pointers and IPLs are used inter alia:
in the industrial processing of materials,
in research and in measuring instruments,
in medical and cosmetic procedures,
during light shows at concerts.
In the case of powerful laser pointers, a special licence is required for use.
Effects on health
Lasers, laser pointers and IPLs can be harmful to eyes and skin, so they should be used carefully. Also, the most powerful lasers and laser pointers can cause ignition.
All lasers should have a label that clearly indicates the Class of the device.
Lasers, laser pointers and IPL devices can cause burns to the skin and eyes and in some cases lead to loss of vision.
The risk of harm depends on:
the power of the laser,
wavelength,
distance from the eye or skin,
how long the eye is exposed to the radiation,
how diffuse the beam is.
If the the beam is not continuous but pulsed, the danger is also dependent on the length and energy of the pulses.
Precautions
To avoid eye damage from a powerful laser, it is important never to look into the laser beam. In some cases protective equipment must be used.
