Directorate of Immigration: Residence permit - General conditions

I am a US citizen and I also have citizenship in a European country, do I have to apply for a residence permit?

Citizens of the EEA/EFTA states do not have to apply for a residence permit in Iceland, irrespective of their dual nationality.

EEA/EFTA citizens are citizens of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

If EEA/EFTA citizens wish to stay in Iceland longer than six months, they must register with Registers Iceland.

Citizens of Denmark (including the Faroe Islands, Greenland and the Åland Islands), Finland, Norway and Sweden register as Nordic nationals.
