Directorate of Immigration: Residence permit cards and travel documents

How do I apply for a travel document?

People who have been granted international protection in Iceland and are legally residing in the country can apply for a travel document for refugees for travels abroad.

People who applied for international protection and were granted a residence permit for humanitarian reasons can apply for a passport for foreign nationals (alien's passport), subject to other conditions being met.

Applications can only be submitted in paper form, either to the drop box in the lobby of the Directorate of Immigration at Dalvegur 18 in Kópavogur or by sending the application by regular mail to the same address. Applications can also be handed in and paid for in the Directorate’s reception or at the offices of District Commissioners outside the capital area.

The application must be in the original copy, completed and signed by the applicant or guardian(s), if the applicant is a child under the age of 18.
