If you hold a temporary residence permit, the card is valid for as long as the residence permit. You will need to apply for a residence permit renewal before you can obtain a new residence permit card. Once a new permit has been granted, you will receive a letter stating that you need to have your photo taken for a new card.

If you have a permanent residence permit your card is valid for five years. When it expires, you need to book a photo appointment and pay ISK 8000 to get a new card.
