Directorate of Immigration: Residence permit cards and travel documents

When do I get my kennitala (id number)?

Kennitala (id number) is a 10-digit number used by individuals, companies and others in Iceland to identify themselves in business and communication.

The Directorate of Immigration does not issue kennitala, but you do receive a kennitala when a residence permit has been granted or issued. You cannot apply for a kennitala from the Directorate of Immigration.

Many people who contact with the Directorate of Immigration use the word kennitala for residence permit cards and residence permits. Some people use the words plastic kennitala, green card or kennitala card for the same item.

Information on which residence permit applications are being processed is on the website of the Directorate of Immigration.

You can read about residence permit cards on the website of the Directorate of Immigration and the service website.

Information on different types of residence permits can also be found on the website of the Directorate of Immigration.
