Directorate of Immigration: Residence permit cards and travel documents
I am an applicant for protection, can I get my passport / travel document back?
Applicants for international protection must hand over their passports and/or other travel documents in their possession to the authorities. The same applies to applicants' spouses and children, whether or not they applied for international protection together or later.
You can get your passport back in the following cases:
You have been granted protection in Iceland and have not chosen to obtain a travel document for refugees.
You have withdrawn your application for protection, are authorised to travel within the Schengen area and can show that you have a flight ticket out of the Schengen area.
If you have applied for voluntary return and completed the necessary registrations with the Directorate of Immigration, you will get your passport back either before or during your return.
If you will be escorted out of the country by the police, you will get your passport back at the destination.
If you cannot get your passport back, you can request a copy of the passport from the Directorate of Immigration. The copy states that the passport is in the custody of the police and that the authenticity of the document has not been confirmed.
You can request a copy by using the contact form. Please include your name and date of birth in the mail.
