Electric scooter wheels

Research project on electric scooters and road safety (2021)

This report was published in the spring of 2021 as a result of a study by VSÓ Counselling and Research Fund, which was supported by the Icelandic Road Administration and the City of Reykjavík. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of electric scooters on road safety and the factors that threaten the safety of electric scooters and other road users. The project was carried out by Svanhildur Jónsdóttir, Lára Margrét Gísladóttir and Ragnar Þór Þrastarson at VSÓ Counselling, and representatives from the City of Reykjavík, the Icelandic Transport and Road Administration were consulted on the project.

The report can be read about foreign research related to electric scooters, review statistics from the Icelandic Transport and Emergency department from 2020, and what safety rules apply in Iceland and other countries. The report clearly states that increased training and teaching on the use of electric scooters reduces the risk of accidents and that in order to ensure safety, various things can be done, either through laws and regulations or through friendly recommendations.
